Warts

The rich history of wart folklore is a testament to how common the wart is and how badly people have always wanted to get rid of them. For a long time, the appearance or disappearance of a wart was thought to be caused by a variety of things ranging from the moon phase, some involvement in witchcraft, or a spiteful neighbor’s revenge! Once you figured out the “cause” of your wart, you may have been advised to tie knots on a string, rub your skin with potatoes, or go toad hunting in hope of a cure.

Thankfully, medical science entered the picture and has since lead us to understand these mysterious blemishes and the most effective ways to treat them. These days, you can have your condition treated easily so that you won’t have to live with unwanted warts.

At Ava MD, our experienced and compassionate skincare team can assess your skin condition and create the most effective treatment plan to suit your lifestyle and your goals.  Read on to learn more about different kinds of warts, available treatments, and the results you can look forward to!

Types of Warts

Almost everyone gets a wart during their lifetime. Warts are a type of skin infection caused by a virus. They appear when upper layers of the skin are exposed to the human papilloma virus (HPV) by both direct or indirect contact.

Warts are most easily recognized as raised bumps on the surface of the skin. Unfortunately for many of us, they can appear on any part of our skin – face, neck, arms, and decolletage included!

They can be rough or smooth, many or few, and may have black dots on the surface. Read on to learn more about different kinds of warts.

  • Common warts – mostly occur on the hands and arms–especially where skin is damaged by biting or picking with nails that can carry the virus.
  • Foot warts (plantar warts) – usually found on the bottoms of the feet in clusters of flat and rough bumps. Walking on plantar warts can be very painful and directs the warts to grow inward, causing more discomfort.
  • Flat warts – the smaller, smoother wart variety that usually appears in large groups of 20-100 growths. Many people may have these without realizing that they have warts, since they are lighter in color and do not protrude from the skin.

Individual warts usually take months or years to resolve themselves–if they don’t spread first. Itching and irritation of the wart can cause permanent scarring. In order to remove or prevent your warts from spreading, Ava MD has a range of treatment options for you and your skincare specialist to choose from.
