Xeomin

Dynamic facial wrinkles are those caused by repeated movements of certain facial muscles, such as from smiling or frowning or worrying. A common method to reduce the appearance of these wrinkles is to prevent the muscle activity causing the wrinkles.

Acclaimed Los Angeles cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Ava Shamban, founder and head of Ava MD, is always at the forefront of providing state-of-the-art cosmetic treatments to her loyal patients for stubborn wrinkles. Accordingly, she and her staff are proud to offer Xeomin treatments for fine lines and wrinkles, as well as for other conditions. The Wrinkle Treatment Effects of Xeomin

Xeomin is a neuromodulator made with a pure form of the botulinum toxin. Cosmetic dermatologists like Dr. Ava inject this wrinkle treatment into a targeted muscle under your skin to inhibit that muscle’s nerve activity. This relaxes the muscle, allowing the overlying skin to relax as well and making it effective for treating a variety of wrinkles, muscle spasms, and other issues.

Xeomin vs. Botox

Because it seems very similar to Botox, many patients ask us to compare Xeomin and Botox. Simply put, the former is pure botulinum toxin type A and 100% additive-free. During the manufacturing process, certain proteins are removed that make it a purer substance. This reduces the chances that your body will develop antibodies to reject the product and make it virtually ineffective. It also decreases your chances of having an allergic reaction (which is already rare).

Furthermore, if you’re like many patients, you’ll appreciate the “lighter” effects of Xeomin treatment – your wrinkles will fade, just as they do with Botox, but you may have more facial muscle freedom of movement. For many patients, these lighter effects are preferable.

Xeomin Injections for the Following Conditions

You may be familiar with the common conditions that xeomin injections are used to treat:

  • Wrinkles
  • Deep-set facial lines
  • Glabellar lines (the lines between your eyebrows, aka frown or “11” lines)
  • Forehead worry lines
  • Crows feet
  • Drooping eyebrows
  • Bunny lines
  • Under-eye lines
  • Neck bands (wrinkles)

But that’s not all that this versatile neuromodulator can treat. In addition, Xeomin treatment is effective for several other conditions.

Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis) – Xeomin injections inhibit your sweat glands from producing sweat. Effective if you experience excessive perspiration under your arms, in your palms, or on the soles of your feet.

Adult Cervical Dystonia – Commonly called neck dystonia, this condition is painful. Although it usually starts as a seemingly harmless, minor twitch of your neck muscles, it soon worsens into uncontrollable contractions that cause violent twists or jerks of your head in any direction – forward, left, backward, or right – which can be incredibly painful. The feeling of helplessness also takes its toll emotionally, as you’re constantly trying to reduce the spasms or wondering when or even if they will ever end. With Xeomin, many patients finally find relief.

Upper Limb Spasticity – If you’ve suffered damage to your nervous system, you know how debilitating this condition is, as it causes your muscles to spasm out of control. This results in pain, discomfort, and (often) embarrassment. Xeomin can alleviate your symptoms and help you gain control back of your arm movement.

Blepharospasm – Another condition of involuntary twitching, this affects your eyelids and can disrupt any activity involving your vision – driving, reading a book, watching a video, etc. – which diminishes your independence and ability to do even mundane things. Fortunately, Xeomin can provide the relief you need.

The Results of Xeomin Treatment

Xeomin injections bring effective relief for muscle spasms and help increase wrinkle prevention. However, no patient or case is the same, so a consultation with a skin specialist such as Dr. Ava is crucial, as a treatment plan can be created based on your overall health and your body’s reaction to treatment.

As for the treatment procedure itself, getting Xeomin injections is a simple 15-minute inpatient procedure involving local anesthesia. You can return to work or resume other activities immediately following a session. For the conditions involving twitching or spasms, you should see relief within a week. Full results for any treated condition normally last three to six months, and they can actually improve with repeated injections since the targeted muscle or muscles become accustomed to being in a relaxed state. Xeomin Side Effects

The side effects from this wrinkle treatment are generally mild and temporary, and they include the following:

  • Pain or soreness
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling around the injection site

Other side effects can happen, as well, depending on the condition you had treated. For upper limb spasticity, dry mouth, breathing difficulties, or cold symptoms are common. After treatment for blepharospasm, you could have impaired vision, dry eye, headaches, or a drooping eyelid. If you have treatment for cervical dystonia, you could experience swallowing difficulties, muscle pain, or weakness.

A further caution is this: if, after your treatment, you seem to be having an allergic reaction, seek emergency care immediately. Such signs include lightheadedness, hives, swelling (face, lips, tongue, throat), and breathing troubles.
