How Does Sclerotherapy Work?

Sclerotherapy is a fairly simple and quick procedure. A saline solution is injected directly into the varicose or spider veins using a very thin needle. The solution essentially irritates the vein, causing it to swell and coagulate, leaving behind scar tissue that is gradually reabsorbed into the body. A single session may take no more than 30 minutes depending on the number of veins being treated and the treatment area. Patients typically see full results within a few weeks.

After sclerotherapy, it is recommended that patients wear support hosiery or Spanx to help compress the treated area, encouraging the body to heal quicker. It is also recommended that patients avoid direct exposure to sunlight as well as hot baths or hot compresses.

Is Sclerotherapy Safe?

Sclerotherapy is highly effective and safe for the majority of patients. When varicose or spider veins are injected with the saline solution, they swell and collapse, causing the body to redirect blood through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is safely reabsorbed into the body, resulting in gradual, healthy results.

Sclerotherapy Side Effects

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that does not require downtime. However, some patients experience mild side effects, such as itching, redness, and even bruising around the treated area. In some cases, larger veins may take more time to dissolve, which may cause lumps or hard patches that can take several months to disappear.

In rare cases, patients may experience an allergic reaction to sclerotherapy, which is why it is so important to first consult with an expert dermatologist such as the team at Ava MD to ensure that you are a good candidate for the procedure. Patients who are pregnant or at risk for blood clots are not eligible for the procedure.
