Jeuveau® is one of the cosmetic injections commonly used to treat frown lines, glabellar lines, expression lines, and other facial fine lines and wrinkles. Like BOTOX®, Jeuveau® uses purified botulinum to temporarily relax dynamic wrinkles. Sometimes called “NEWTOX” because of its similarity to BOTOX®, Jeuveau® is much better suited for certain types of wrinkles. This treatment provides some of the same benefits of a surgical facelift without the discomfort or recovery time.
What Is Jeuveau®?
Jeuveau® is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used in adults to temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines). Originally designed to treat frown lines in between the eyebrows, it can also be used to treat many facial areas in need of anti-aging.
How Does Jeuveau® Compare to BOTOX®?
You won’t notice a major difference between the two. Both products work well at improving the look of wrinkles but BOTOX® is approved to treat more types of wrinkles than Jeuveau®, however, studies have shown Jeuveau® has a slightly faster onset of action, and may last longer. Choosing one over the other is a decision based on patient experience, aesthetic goals, and your Ava MD provider’s experience and preference.
What Does Jeuveau® Treat?
Jeuveau® has been studied and shown to be effective to treat glabellar lines (the frown lines between the eyebrows, also known as the 11’s). Once injected into the treatment site, the botulinum toxin works by temporarily freezing the small muscle group. This creates smooth and relaxed facial lines.
However, this treatment can also be used off labels to treat the following:
- Forehead
- Crow’s feet
- Kisser’s/smoker’s lines
- Frown lines
- Neck bands
Jeuveau® can also be used to treat several additional uses, including migraine headaches, overactive bladder, excessive sweating, and urinary incontinence. Consult with your Ava MD provider for off label usage and any contraindications with pre-existing health conditions or medication.
Who Is a Candidate for Jeuveau®?
If you’re unhappy with the appearance of moderate to severe wrinkles, Jeuveau® is a great option. It’s a safe option for people with different skin types and needs and it works well with previous BOTOX® injections if you’re curious about a treatment that may last longer. Individuals who are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a neuromuscular condition, or allergic to botulinum toxin type A (BOTOX®) should not use Jeuveau®.
What to Expect From Your Jeuveau® Appointment at Ava MD
During your consultation, your Ava MD provider will work with you to outline your aesthetic goals and your skin’s needs. We will then wipe off any makeup or other cosmetics covering the area of treatment. After your skin is cleansed and numbed for treatment, we make several small injections in and around the treatment area, typically in places where dynamic wrinkles or tense facial muscles are present.
As the treatment begins to take hold, your muscles will begin to relax, creating a smoother appearance in your fine lines and wrinkles. While you may notice small results immediately, full results develop in the following week. Treatment should take about 20-30 minutes to complete. After treatment, you’ll be able to resume your day immediately.
Is Jeuveau® Safe?
Yes. It’s also safe to use alongside fillers to combat the march of time. That’s because Jeuveau® prevents muscle contractions while fillers redistribute volume, adding depth to hollow areas. Patients are cautioned to avoid physical exertion or activity that may increase blood flow, as this can quickly metabolize Jeuveau®.
If you’ve ever had an allergic reaction to a botulinum toxin while treating expression lines (or in general) Jeuveau® is likely not for you. You should also avoid alcohol or tobacco consumption for at least 24 hours after the procedure. If you experience swelling, bruising, or redness, use a cold compress to help alleviate any discomfort.
Results You Can Expect From Jeuveau®
While this treatment will reduce and smooth away your wrinkles and imperfections, results are not considered permanent. Results from Jeuveau® can last anywhere from 5-6 months, compared to BOTOX® which tends to last 3-4 months at most. Once we’re finished, you can head back to your regular routine and go to work, home, the store, anywhere. While your fine lines and wrinkles do return, periodic touch-up sessions at Ava MD will keep them in check.
