Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic therapy, also known as PDT, is an effective means of reducing active acne as well as precancerous lesions and some early stage skin cancers. It is FDA approved, with proven efficacy and minimal downtime. If you have actinic keratoses or acne that has not responded well to other types of treatments, PDT could be a good option for you.

To learn more about photodynamic therapy and to schedule a consultation to see if you are a good candidate for this treatment, call the skilled, board-certified dermatologists at Ava MD today at (310) 439-5417 (Beverly Hills) or (310) 736-6146 (Santa Monica)!

PDT for Acne

At Ava MD, we offer a wide variety of acne treatments at our Acne Treatment Center. Acne is the biggest skin concern in America, with over 40 million people of all ages suffering from it. It can be difficult to manage, but when you find the right treatment plan it can work wonders. Patients often find they have more self-confidence and feel better about their appearance when they finally achieve clear skin.

If traditional acne treatments, such as oral or topical medication, are not working for you, you may be a good candidate for PDT. PDT works by activating a topical photosensitive solution through certain light wavelengths, which in turn kills the acne-causing bacteria in the skin, leaving you with clearer, healthier skin and reducing pore size as well, which helps prevent future breakouts by providing less of a breeding ground for bacteria.

PDT for Actinic Keratosis

Actinic keratoses, abbreviated AK, are pre-cancerous lesions formed from UV ray damage to the skin. They are more common in fair skinned people who have had a lot of sun exposure in their lives. AK appears as scaly, thick, or crusty patches of skin. If you develop one of these growths, you should have it checked out immediately because there is a chance that it could become cancerous. If left untreated, actinic keratoses have around a 20% chance of turning into squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. Bald men are especially susceptible to AK.

PDT is considered a standard treatment for actinic keratosis, and is highly effective, with a 14% higher chance of complete clearance of AKs after three3 months as compared to cryotherapy. PDT also generally results in a better cosmetic outcome than other types of treatments. It is necessary to be evaluated in person to see if you are a good candidate for photodynamic therapy for your actinic keratosis.
