What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is essentially a form of physical exfoliation that involves a sterile surgical scalpel that is used to gently scrape along the skin’s surface. The shaving technique gently removes the top layer of dead skin to reveal vibrant, rejuvenated skin. The process triggers the skin’s cellular turnover, which leads to bright, smooth skin and even tone and texture.

As we age, our skin naturally does not replenish skin cells as quickly as it once did, allowing the dead skin cells to build up and create a dull, dry appearance. Dermaplaning stimulates the skin in to producing new skin cells again. It also helps smooth away rough textures and lightens scars or other types of unwanted pigmentations.

What to Expect During a Dermaplaning Session

Dermaplaning is performed only on the cheeks, chin, forehead, and temples, so a single session will typically take no more than thirty minutes to an hour depending on the patient. Dermaplaning is often combined with chemical peels to enhance the final results. It is crucial to undergo this particular treatment with a board-certified dermatologist who has extensive training. Everyone’s skin is unique and a skilled dermatologist will be able to customize the treatment in order to get the best possible results. Patients with thin or easily irritated skin may not be good candidates for the procedure.

Following the Dermaplaning session, the patient will receive a cooling treatment, such as a cooling ultrasound or face make to soothe and hydrate the skin and reduce any redness.
